The Future Perfect Tense: Formation, Uses and BAC-Style Exercises

1. Definition
The Future Perfect tense is used to describe an action that will be completed before a specific point in the future. It expresses the idea that something will have happened by a certain time in the future.
2. Formation
Affirmative: Subject + will + have + past participle (V3)
Example: By next year, I will have finished my studies.
Negative: Subject + will + not + have + past participle (V3)
Example: She will not have arrived by 8 PM.
Interrogative: Will + subject + have + past participle (V3)?
Example: Will they have completed the project by Friday?
3. Uses of the Future Perfect
Use 1: Completed action before a future time
We use the Future Perfect to show that something will be finished before a specific time in the future.
Example: By 2030, scientists will have found a cure for many diseases.
Use 2: Duration before a future time
With non-continuous verbs, we use the Future Perfect to show how long something will have lasted by a certain future time.
Example: By next month, I will have lived in Algiers for five years.
Use 3: Cause and effect in the future
Example: When you arrive, I will have prepared everything.
4. Time Expressions with Future Perfect
The Future Perfect is commonly used with these time expressions:
- By + time: by Monday, by next week, by 2026
- By the time + clause: by the time you arrive, by the time he comes
- Before: before the exam, before the end of the year
- In + time period: in two years, in three months
5. Difference between Future Simple and Future Perfect
Future Simple: I will finish my homework. (focus on the action itself)
Future Perfect: I will have finished my homework by 8 PM. (focus on completion before a deadline)
BAC-Style Exercises
Exercise 1: Put the verbs in brackets into the Future Perfect tense:

Exercise 2 (BAC-style): Rewrite the following sentences using the Future Perfect tense:
(1) I will finish my BAC exam. Then I will relax. (By the time…)
Answer: By the time I relax, I will have finished my BAC exam.
(2) The government will complete the highway. This will happen before 2027.
Answer: The government will have completed the highway by 2027.
(3) She will graduate from university. Then she will look for a job.
Answer: She will have graduated from university before she looks for a job.

Sample Answer: By the time I am 30, I will have finished my university studies and will have found a good job. I will have travelled to several countries and will have gained enough experience in my field. I hope I will have built a successful career by then.
